Amazing that tourism goes back so far. And so interesting that the Swiss figured it out -- down to "Even the cows in the valleys are intentional." And it all works. (like a Swiss clock).
I spent a summer studying in Montreux and at that time (20 years ago??) Interlaken became the HQ of adventure tourism - skydiving (views) climbing, etc…. Anyone around looking for adventure went to Interlaken!
Thanks @Daniel Park so often times we visit places without getting the back story. Switzerland’s history with tourism, and transportation was something I had never thought of. I cannot wait to return.
Of course I have heard of Bhutan. I have not gone, but would love to! I will research a bit about their model. Maybe that will be my big trip for 2027!
Yes, I might go there this September - I can highly recommend the movie "The Monk and the Gun", which takes place in Bhutan (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt15560314/)
@PEB thank you for the restack!

I found it to be amazing. I would love to relocate there. It is expensive but the quality of life seems to be amazing.
Super expensive - I survived on wine and cheese and kabob that summer…
Wine, cheese, kabob? Yeah sounds rough because chocolate was not on your diet. 😉
I have been planning to go back and visit the Alps since I was there last year. The history of tourism is fascinating. Thank you!

Oh thanks for this! The alp region, and the feeling of being there, is very dear to me as an Austrian.
Have u ever heard of Bhutan? Or been there?
They have a very unique approach to tourism, which might be an interesting model to fix today's tourism effects on the environment and local citizens.
