Five stores to fill one list, coolers in the truck, an hour of dark road home. Then one night, Hershey's Kisses at the register. Cancun, early nineties.
The sound of Gary's grinder is why I drink instant coffee. As for shopping in Cancun back in the day, whoa! I guess Door Dash wasn't up and running back then. I recently complained that my local CVS had a million brands of aftershave except for my favorite, and that my local ShopRite had every kind of bagel except for cinnamon-raisin. Curses! So thoughtless of them. It's easy to forget how good we have it now. Fun story.
Door Dash, I have never lived anywhere with Door Dash services. One time I was driving home from Cancun alone, during the day. A cop pulled me over for “speeding.” Now I had $1000 USD in my pocket. I refused to pay the “fine” on the spot. I pointed to the cooler in the back and told him to take the hot dogs I had just purchased. He actually looked in the cooler, saw the hot dogs and paused. Closed the lid and told me I was free to go.
Reminds @Bob DePasquale of the Ace hardware that went in in the town I grew up in. It was one of the first businesses. Great memories we didn't have too many scavenger hunts like that though
Oh, Parisina! And all the food diving to find food! And sadly, those cows that wandered onto 307 at night. . . and the Ace. We were there once during a futbal game and the cashiers wouldn't take any customers until the next goal. . . Great memories of the early days, Kay.
Great memories for sure. I think in many ways life was simple because we just were trying to live a day to day existence. And you know that was enough.

Funny how a hardware store can stick with you a lifetime.
That was a while ago but the memory is vivid. 😁
Love your stories.
A great tell of great memories
Thank you John. I commit these memories to "paper", more memories and details come flooding back from the crypts of time in my mind.
